Adventure day on the German Wine Route
The German Wine Route Adventure Day has been held annually on the last Sunday of August along the German Wine Route since 1985 - with the exception of 1986 . This is always closed to car traffic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a cultural program is offered. Usually between 300,000 and 400,000 visitors a year have come up to now.
The idea for the adventure day was born in 1985 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the German Wine Route. Dieter Hörner , founding father and chairman of the "Board of Trustees for the Design of the German Wine Route", was looking for something special, something with which this anniversary could be celebrated appropriately.
In cooperation with the radio station SWF1 , the entire length of the German Wine Route, i.e. from Schweigen to Bockenheim , was closed to car traffic on August 25, 1985 and an accompanying program was broadcast. The idea was to coordinate the serving of certain types of wine in all participating wine villages at the same time, so that all participants knew what they were currently having in their glasses . Participation cost DM 5, - and you could try as much wine as you wanted along the closed route.
The starting shot for the first day of adventure was given at 10 a.m. and at the same time it was the start of fun runs in the southern and central Haard area.
The event should remain unique and not be repeated annually, so the event day in 1986 did not take place. Due to the great success, the organizers decided to celebrate this spectacle annually from 1987 onwards.
In the years 1987-1992 this festival became more and more popular and well known. From 1993 onwards, not only the annually elected wine queen took part in the opening ceremony , but also the current minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate (in some years represented by the incumbent economics minister).
The "German Wine Route Adventure Day" is the longest wine festival in the Palatinate and the oldest bike adventure day in the Palatinate.
