El Papiol - Ermita de la Salut

The Ermita de la Salut is a small hermit church in Catalonia . It is located on a 225 meter high hill in the Serra de Collserola area northeast of the town of El Papiol on the border with the neighboring town of Valldoreix to the east in the municipality of Sant Cugat del Vallès . The church belongs to the parish of Santa Eulàlia del Papiol in the diocese of Sant Feliu de Llobregat .

history

About the builder (s) of the originally St. Eulalia , from 1717 the church dedicated to the Mother of God Maria ( Mare de Déu ) is not known. Because of its unstructured and unadorned construction, the eastern part of the nave and the two side apses - marked by a clearly visible structural joint - are mostly classified as pre-Romanesque and date back to the end of the 10th century. The apse , divided by pilaster strips and ending with a round arch frieze below the eaves , is assigned to the 11th century, the time of the beginning Catalan Romanesque , as is the western part of the church building with its portal on the south side . In the 14th century the church was the parish church of El Papiol for several years. In 1911 the church was restored.

Stone material

The approximately 20.50 meter long and inside about 3.50 meter wide and 4.80 meter high church is built entirely from largely unprocessed rubble . Only on the corners and on the buttresses as well as on the portal, which was built later, there are precisely worked house stones .

Exterior construction

The church building, without a tower, but with a bell gable ( espadanya ) placed in the middle after the church was expanded to the west, consists of an elongated nave with an apse adjoining it to the east, which is the only component divided by pilaster strips and a simple round arch frieze. What is remarkable is the fact that there are two lateral apses in the east, which move the church building into the vicinity of the later three-corner complexes. In the upper area of the completely unadorned west facade there is a narrow twin window ( ajimez ) - otherwise the nave is only lit through a small window on the south side; only the three apses each have a central window. The entrance to the church is - as usual in the region - on the south side and is framed by two mighty buttresses .

Interior of the church

inner space

The interior of the church has a single nave and is very dark overall; the walls are not plastered. The nave is spanned by a barrel vault with belt arch beams that rest on wall templates. The thrust is diverted in the east by the two side apses, in the west by powerful buttresses; the three apses show the usual and statically rather unproblematic domes . There is a small oculus in the arched gusset above the central apse .

Furnishing

The altar set up in the center of the three apses dates from 1972. The medieval-looking figure of a Maria with child of the Sedes sapientiae type is the work of the regional carver Antoni Agraz i Buil from 1977.

Processions

Every year there are two processions to the church: on the second Sunday in September the residents of El Papiol and on October 12th the residents of Valldoreix make a pilgrimage to the church to the northeast and west above the respective places.
