Ernest Cosson

Ernest Saint-Charles Cosson (born July 22, 1819 in Paris , † December 31, 1889 there ) was a French botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Coss. "

Life

Cosson was first to become a businessman like his father, but then studied medicine with a degree in surgery in 1847 and also dealt with botany, where he was a student of Adrien de Jussieu .

With Jacques Nicolas Ernest Germain de Saint-Pierre (1815–1882) he wrote an atlas of the flora around Paris. Cosson collected especially in Algeria , where he took ten trips from 1852 to 1861, which he financed himself, and in Tunisia . Jean-Louis Kralik was the curator of his important herbarium, which went to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle .

From 1873 he was a member of the Académie des sciences . In 1863 and 1880 he was president of the Société botanique de France .

Honors

The genus Cossonia Durieu from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae) was named after Cosson . The genus Diserneston Jaub. & Spach from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) honors Cosson and Jacques Nicolas Ernest Germain de Saint Pierre , who both have the first name Ernest. Both together had published several times Floren for the Paris area.
