Ernst Baumann (photographer)

Ernst Baumann (born May 14, 1906 in Bad Reichenhall ; † January 12, 1985 ) was a German photographer and publisher of postcards.

Life

He became known for his visual dramatization of the mountain landscape, with which he shaped the visual world of the 1930s. After compulsory school he attended the college for basket weaving in Lichtenfels , in order to continue his parents' business afterwards. In 1924 he was given a camera, from which time he devoted himself to photography . As early as 1926 he registered a trade as a photographer. Ernst Baumann was an enthusiastic mountaineer and skier, his photo series appeared in numerous alpine magazines. From 1932 to 1939 he worked as a still photographer for Luis Trenker's films . In 1935 his first book My Mountains, My Camera was published . In addition to his work in the alpine region, he worked as a photo reporter for the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung , made industrial reports for the automotive industry as well as travel reports in the Mediterranean region and on the Atlantic islands. During the Second World War he worked as a war correspondent. When he returned to Bad Reichenhall from American captivity in 1947, he rebuilt his photo business with an affiliated postcard publisher.

On May 14, 2006, on the 100th birthday of Ernst Baumann, a permanent exhibition with works from his early creative period from 1925 to 1950 was opened in the mountain hotel on the Predigtstuhl near Bad Reichenhall.
