The pulpit is a 1,613  m high mountain within the bar mountain in the Berchtesgaden Alps and is next to Hochstaufen , Zwiesel and the Unterberg to the local mountains, the town of Bad Reichenhall .

Development

In addition to hiking trails, the Predigtstuhl has been accessible since 1928 by the Predigtstuhlbahn , the oldest cable car in the world that is still in its original state. The mountain station with mountain restaurant and the mountain hotel, which has been closed since 2014 due to necessary renovation measures, is located near the summit at an altitude of 1583  m . The restaurant's terrace, which has been glazed since 1954, offers a view of the entire Bad Reichenhall basin and the surrounding mountains.

About 200 m from the hotel is the Teisendorfer hut , which has been run as a self-catering hut by the DAV Teisendorf section since 2004 .

Use for sport and leisure

Since the start of operations, the Predigtstuhlbahn has been used mainly by day trippers. In addition to refreshment stops in the restaurant in Schlegelmulde , the Predigtstuhl is also the starting point for simple and demanding hikes in high alpine terrain. Traveling by train also shortens the length of a mountain crossing considerably.

The paragliding club Albatros Reichenhall eV has two well-frequented launch sites for paragliders in Schlegelmulde and Hochschlegel .

The Predigtstuhl was already used by winter sports enthusiasts in the early years of the Predigtstuhlbahn. Before a toboggan lift from Schlegelmulde to Hochschlegel was able to transport 250 people per hour in 1937, ski tours and descents into the valley were the only options for skiing at the Predigtstuhl. The descent via the Törlschneid to Winkl , which is also suitable for inexperienced skiers, was no longer allowed to be marked after an objection by the Bischofswiesen forestry office . The well-known and feared north run was discovered in October 1933 by Hans Flatscher, an employee of the Predigtstuhlbahn. With the support of the city council and the Bad Reichenhall ski club, the north descent from Schlegelmulde via Spechtenköpfe to today's fairground on Loferer Straße was achieved with little financial outlay for felling the trees . Ski races were also held on the north run, which good skiers could master in 20 to 30 minutes. The exceptional athlete from Reichenhall and world-class skier Josef “Pewo” Pertsch, who fell at the foot of Mount Olympus in Greece on April 9, 1941 at the age of only 21, still holds the best time on the north descent with 6 minutes and 42 seconds. At the end of the 1980s, the north run was finally closed, by then nine people had been killed while using it. In 1956 the chair lift between Schlegelalm and Predigtstuhl was built, and in 1974 a new chair lift was built on the Hochschlegel. The lifts were in operation until 1994, plans to reopen the ski area failed several times in the past.

In 1928 the “Predigtstuhlschanze” was built on the Hochschlegel , and distances of up to 40 meters were possible on the ski jump .

Predigtstuhl as a new district

After the Predigtstuhlbahn had to file for bankruptcy in 2009, it was acquired on January 1, 2013 by “Marga und Josef Posch GmbH & Co. KG”. The entrepreneur Max Aicher is an equal partner in the GmbH . In the course of the resumption of operations and the expansion of the gastronomy at the Predigtstuhl and also with a view to the reopening of the hotel, Aicher pushed ahead with the creation of a new district. At the beginning of 2015, Auf dem Predigtstuhl was officially registered as the tenth district of the city of Bad Reichenhall. The background to this was the connection to the sewer network, which is only subsidized by the state if the lines run within a district. Previously, the wastewater at the Predigtstuhl was disposed of in a septic tank .

Trivia

There were attempts by private individuals to erect a 55 m high statue of Jesus on the top of the mountain near the mountain station. It should be 22 m higher than the model in Rio de Janeiro . At the end of May 2008 the initiator Harry Vossberg and the artist and architect Ludwig Valentin Angerer presented the plans for the statue of Christ in a press conference on the sermon chair. However, at its meeting on September 18, 2008, the city council decided not to offer a building permit.
