The Predigtstuhlbahn is a listed large cabin cable car in Bad Reichenhall up to the Predigtstuhl . The cable car started operating in 1928, making it the oldest original large cabin cable car in the world. The world ranks them among the 10 most spectacular passenger ropeways in the world.

Establishment and History

With the aim of making Bad Reichenhall competitive again as a spa and bathing resort at the end of the 1920s, hotelier Alois Seethaler ( Axelmannstein ) and spa director Josef Niedermeier initiated the construction of a cable car to the Predigtstuhl, for which concrete plans were made between 1926 and 1927.

The three of gasoline yield and Alfred Zenns planned " monumental pillars " of reinforced concrete and the mountain and valley stations were from the Hochtief AG under the leadership of architect Wilhelm Kahrs-style of home style influenced New Objectivity executed.

Between August 1927 and June 1928, the Leipzig company Adolf Bleichert & Co. manufactured and installed the core of the aerial tramway and the two pavilion- type cabins that move synchronously up and down the valley using the actual cable car technology based on the Bleichert-Zuegg system . The wire ropes were supplied by the company Westfälische Drahtindustrie from Hamm . Alois Zuegg formulated the claim to implement the best and most efficient concept, because “in consideration of the demanding spa audience of Bad Reichenhall, elegance and comfort must not be lacking.” On July 1, 1928, the Predigtstuhlbahn went into operation.

The original suspension cable from 1928 is still in use today. For technical reasons and in order to meet the safety requirements, the suspension cable is shifted by around 6 meters every 12 years, but can be used for several decades due to its reserves.

Since 2006, the Predigtstuhlbahn has been the only cable car in the world under monument protection.

To celebrate the 90th anniversary in 2018, the renovated areas of the bar lounge, the dining room and the panorama terrace on the mountain station were handed over to their destination. The great-grandchildren of the former company Adolf Bleichert & Co. , which built the Predigtstuhlbahn at that time, were also present for this anniversary .

In the vicinity of the Predigtstuhlbahn mountain station was on October 6, 1928 at 1583  m above sea level. NN also opened a restaurant and the first mountain hotel in Germany.

The terrace of the restaurant offers a panoramic view of Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg as well as the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps .

However, the operation of the hotel has been shut down since 2014 due to necessary renovation measures. In order to be able to receive state funding, especially for the conversion of the sewage disposal from the existing septic tank to a sewer with access to the public sewer network, the two parcels with mountain station and hotel including restaurant below the Predigtstuhl summit were opened on January 2, 2015 under the name " Auf dem Predigtstuhl “officially becomes the tenth district of the city of Bad Reichenhall.

freetime and sports

The train provides easy access to the Lattengebirge and thus considerably shortens the tours to the individual peaks or crossing the Lattengebirge. The paragliding club Albatros Reichenhall eV uses the train to reach the launch sites in Schlegelmulde and Hochschlegel in a short time.

Until 1994 there was a small ski area at the Predigtstuhl with two fixed-grip 1-seater chairlifts from 1957 and 1974. The skiers were brought up the mountain to the ski area and back down into the valley with the Predigtstuhl lift. In addition, if there was sufficient snow cover, a valley run to Schneizlreuth to Baumgarten and to the valley station via the difficult north run was also possible. Up to the final closure of the north run at the end of the 1980s, nine skiers had fatal accidents there.

In February 2009 the Predigtstuhlbahn had to file for bankruptcy, but the service was maintained. Negotiations with several potential investors about the purchase of the railway took place.

In December 2012 it was announced that the railway, including the mountain hotel and the Alm in Schlegelmulde , had been acquired by "Marga und Josef Posch GmbH & Co. KG" with effect from January 1, 2013. The purchase price should have been 1 million euros. The city council's considerations to acquire the facility as part of an alleged right of first refusal were unsuccessful, as the city administration believed that there was no right of first refusal. Marga und Josef Posch GmbH & Co. KG belongs to the Max Aicher group of companies .
