Ernst Carl Constantin von Schardt

Ernst Carl Constantin von Schardt (born April 9, 1744 , † May 5, 1833 in Weimar ) was a Saxon-Weimar civil servant and Illuminate . He was the eldest brother of Charlotte von Stein .

Life

Schardt studied law in Jena and became a secret secretary in Weimar . In 1770 he became a councilor, in 1772 a court councilor, and in 1776 a secret councilor. 1789-1790 he was active in the senior consistory without any payments. In 1798 he became landscape treasurer, 1802 privy councilor , and 1809-1814 he was president of the landscape council of Weimar.

He was a member of the Strict Observance , a branch of Freemasonry , under the name 'a Campana argentea'. He was accepted into the Illuminati League with the religious name 'Apollonius' and was the so-called regent here. Johann Joachim Christoph Bode lived in his house after his arrival in Weimar before moving into the palace of Countess Charitas Emilie von Bernstorff.

Schardt was the eldest brother of Charlotte von Stein, of Luise Franziska Sophie von Imhoff and Ludwig Ernst Wilhelm von Schardt (* 1748; † September 3, 1826 in Ilmenau ). Ludwig Ernst Wilhelm became a lieutenant and was an officer in the Saxon-Weimar service from 1771, advancing to court squire in 1775 and chamberlain in 1782. From 1786 he was chamberlain and captain.

Ernst Carl Constantin von Schardt married Friederike Sophie Eleonore (born November 23, 1755 in Hanover , † July 30, 1819 in Weimar) in April 1778 , born von Bernstorff. After the death of her parents, she was raised in Holstein by her aunt Charitas Emilie Countess von Bernstorff (the wife of Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff ) . While she lived with her aunt at Gut Borstel , Bode was her teacher in music , literature and language . After a few miscarriages, she remained childless. Johann Gottfried Herder adored her so passionately in very intimate letters that he almost committed adultery in April 1783 with his wife. In May she traveled with him to Hamburg . She was an opponent of the French Revolution and a poet . In 1795 she gave French lessons to Herder's daughter Luise . On April 6, 1817 , she converted to Catholicism . Herder had a portrait of her.
