Ernst Christian Georg August von Hardenberg , since 1778 Count von Hardenberg (born March 2, 1754 in Hanover , † December 25, 1827 in Vienna ) was a German politician and Hanoverian diplomat.

Life

Ernst Christian Georg August von Hardenberg came from the Lower Saxon noble family of Hardenberg and was born as the second eldest son of Hans Ernst von Hardenberg (1729–1797) and Anna Eleonore Katharina von Wangenheim (1731–1786).

He was a second cousin of the Prussian State Chancellor Karl August Fürst von Hardenberg .

After studying at the University of Leipzig , he became a law firm auditor in Hanover in 1775 . In 1779 he was appointed Chamber and Secret Legation Councilor. From 1790 to 1792 he served as envoy extraordinary in Dresden and between 1793 and 1805 in Vienna. In 1806 he was appointed secret council and in 1814 cabinet minister.

Congress of Vienna

At the Congress of Vienna , Hardenberg was next to Ernst Friedrich Herbert zu Münster the second envoy of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , from October 12, 1814 Kingdom of Hanover . They managed to gain territorial gains as well as an increase in the number of inhabitants through skillful negotiations and barter deals.

After the Congress of Vienna, Hardenberg remained as envoy in Vienna until his death.
