Ernst Elster was born as the son of the tram driver Gottlieb Elster and Sophie, née Vollheide. His father died when he was 14 years old.

Scholarships and first picture sales helped Elster to attend the arts and crafts schools in Magdeburg and Berlin. In 1919 Elster presented its first works to the public in exhibitions and picture galleries.

After a stay in Italy in 1925, according to the address book of 1927, he was again registered in Braunschweig with the studio address at Bertramstrasse 50 and living with his mother ( Ölschlägern 16 ). The address of Ernst Elster and his mother changed with the address book entry from 1930 to Wilhelmitorwall 20 . In 1933 he set up his studio at Bohlweg 66 . His landlord's renovation plans meant that he had to give up his studio in Braunschweig and moved to Knesebeck without his mother in 1934, where he then acquired the stump of an old Dutch windmill in 1949 and expanded it into a residential studio - today in the village as "Elstermühle" ( Windmühlenweg 24 ) known. In 1934 he also married his wife Dorothea, b. Cool.

From 1933 to 1945 Elster was a guest at the Klosterstrasse studio community in Berlin. In 1942 he stayed in Norway on behalf of the Reich Propagandamt (art for state buildings). Among other things, he portrayed Albert Genzen , in 1929 the Prime Minister of Brunswick Heinrich Jasper and in 1934 for the Hall of Honor of the National Socialists in Buchholz the NS district leader Fritz Fröhlich . A self-portrait made in 1924 is in the depot of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum as well as his picture Inspiration in the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig . When he was not yet 40, he was elected chairman of the Lower Saxony Artists' Association, to which he belonged from 1924 to 1930. From 1936 to 1942 he belonged to the Braunschweiger Künstlerbund and took part in its group exhibitions. In 1942 he exhibited with other regional artists in the municipal middle school on the Holy Cross in Celle under the title "Artists in the factories". The exhibition was organized by the Gauleitung Ost-Hannover of the NSDAP .

On April 11, 1964, Elster received the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit . In the same year, on August 11th, Ernst Elster died of a heart condition. In Wittingen -Knesebeck the Ernst-Elster-Weg is named after him. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, the painter's circle of friends exhibited some of Elster's paintings in Knesebeck Castle .
