Ernst Friedberger
Ernst Friedberger (born May 17, 1875 in Gießen ; † January 25, 1932 in Berlin ) was a German immunologist and hygienist of Jewish descent . From 1915 to 1926 he was Professor of Hygiene and Institute Director at the University of Greifswald and then until his death director of the Prussian Research Institute for Hygiene and Immunity in Berlin-Dahlem .
Life
Ernst Friedberger was born in Gießen in 1875 as the son of Sarah and Max Friedberger and grew up with a brother named Otto and his orphaned cousin Max Meyerfeld . He studied medicine at the Universities of Gießen , Munich , Heidelberg , Würzburg and Berlin and received his doctorate in Gießen in 1899 with a thesis "on the acidity and pepsin content of urine in diseases of the stomach". He then worked as an assistant at the Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin. In 1901 he switched to an assistant position at the University of Königsberg , where he worked as a lecturer in hygiene after completing his habilitation in 1903 . From 1908 he was adjunct professor , in the same year he became head of the department for experimental therapy at the Institute for Pharmacology at Berlin University.
At the end of 1914 he was appointed to the University of Greifswald , where he took over the chair for hygiene at the beginning of 1915 and became director of the hygiene institute. Among his students in Greifswald was Paul Konitzer , who received his doctorate from Friedberger in 1920 and, after the end of World War II, became President of the German Central Administration for Health Care in the Soviet Zone of Occupation . In 1926 he returned to Berlin, where he worked as director of the Prussian Research Institute for Hygiene and Immunity in Dahlem until his death . He died in Berlin in 1932 of kidney disease , which was probably due to a spotted fever infection caused by the war .
Scientific work
Ernst Friedberger's research focused on the basics of anaphylaxis at the beginning of his activity . Later in his career he worked on various aspects of the immune system by bacterial pathogens , with epidemiological studies and in particular with the hygiene of the clothes , the apartment and the food of people.
