Baron Ernst Friedrich von Liphart (* 1847 in Kambja ; † 1932 in Leningrad ) was a Russian painter, art expert and art collector .

Life

Ernst Friedrich von Liphart came from the noble Baltic German family von Liphart , owners of the Raadi estate in the municipality of Vastseliina .

Since 1860 Ernst accompanied his father, Karl Eduard von Liphart, on his business trips to Italy and when buying pictures for the art collection of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolajewna , daughter of Tsar Nicholas I.

Ernst studied painting under Franz von Lenbach and accompanied him on a study visit to Spain from 1866 to 1868.

Ernst was disinherited from his father in 1873 after converting to Catholicism in order to marry the Florentine Luisa Juan. He then studied in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian .

Karl Eduard von Liphart stayed in Florence and died there in 1891.

In 1886 Ernst Friedrich von Liphart moved to Saint Petersburg, where he became known as a successful artist. He taught at the drawing school of the imperial society for the advancement of the arts. His students included u. a. Eugene Lanceray . In 1906 he was appointed curator of the Ermitage picture gallery and held the post until 1929.

After the October Revolution , the Liphart family's art collections were confiscated. Some works of art appeared at an auction in Copenhagen. The Raadi family residence became the property of the University of Tartu.

Ernst Friedrich von Liphart had to leave his apartment in 1921. His daughter helped a tsarist officer to hide and was executed for it.

In the last years of his life, Liphart wrote a novel and a play.
