Ernst G. Bauer

Ernst G. Bauer (born February 27, 1928 ) is a German-American physicist .

Bauer received his diploma in physics from Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1953 and his doctorate in 1955. In 1958 he moved to the Michelson Laboratory in China Lake (California) where he became head of the Crystal Physics Branch and also became a citizen of the USA . In 1969 he became professor and director at the Physics Institute at Clausthal University of Technology . Bauer became Distinguished Research Professor at Arizona State University in 1991 , where he worked part-time for his position in Germany until 1996. Since 1996 he has only been at Arizona State University.

Bauer conducts research in the field of epitaxy and thin layers . In 1962 he invented the low-energy electron microscope (Engl. Low Energy Electron Microscope (LEEM)).
