Life

He was initially vicar in Lucerne and from 1916 to 1924 pastor of the Christian Catholic parish of Wegenstetten-Hellikon-Zuzgen. From 1924 until his retirement in 1960 he was a professor at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern.

Ernst Gaugler was married to Cécile Lauterburg, the daughter of the Bernese Reformed theology professor Moritz Lauterburg .

Services

A special feature of Gaugler's historical-critical exegesis , which arose from the examination of ecumenism , patristicism and Jewish theology , is its spiritual dimension, as Gaugler also integrated impulses from Swabian Pietism and the Russian philosophy of religion (including Berdjajew ) into his exegesis . Numerous publications - many of them in the International Church Journal  - come from his pen, including a two-volume commentary on Romans.
