Ernst Gruber (born December 20, 1918 in Vienna , † August 24, 1979 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( hero tenor ).

Life

Ernst Gruber studied with Karl Rössl-Majdan in Vienna and with Hans Depter in Graz . In 1947 he made his debut at the Schauspielhaus Graz as Max im Freischütz . In 1947 and 1948 he made guest appearances at various theaters in Switzerland and Hungary .

Hermann Abendroth engaged him in 1949 at the National Theater Weimar . In 1953 he went to Leipzig, where he sang as a hero tenor - especially as a Wagner singer . At the same time there was a guest performance contract with the Dresden State Opera , where he z. B. sang Florestan from Fidelio in 1959 . In 1957 he sang Erik in the Flying Dutchman at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino .

In 1962 he sang the title role of Rienzi in Leipzig. From 1964 Gruber belonged to the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera . Until 1970 he had another engagement at the Leipzig Opera House .

Gruber has made guest appearances at the opera houses of Amsterdam , Barcelona , Budapest , Frankfurt am Main and Lisbon , as well as in Poland , Finland , Romania and the United States .

Gruber created main roles in the Wagner operas Tannhäuser , Tristan and Lohengrin . He also designed the Radames in Aida and the title hero in the Otello by Giuseppe Verdi . He also sang the title roles in Sadko by Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow and in Sly by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari , as well as Aegisth in Elektra by Richard Strauss .

Gruber was also successful as a concert soloist.

Ernst Gruber died on August 24, 1979 at the age of 60 in Berlin.
