Ernst Gustav Doerell (* 22. August 1832 in Freiberg , † 18th March 1877 in Aussig ) was a painter of romanticism .

Life

The miner's son lost his father early. His mother moved with the four-year-old Ernst Gustav to live with her relatives in Teplitz . In 1846 Doerell began a commercial apprenticeship as a commercial assistant with his uncle Josef Krombholz in Leitmeritz , which he did not finish. When he returned to Teplitz, he began training as a painter and house painter with the painter and decorator Franz Hybram.

During this time Doerell roamed the area around Teplitz with his sketchbook and drew landscapes. Doerell used a small inheritance that fell to him to begin studying at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts , which he had to abandon after his funds had run out. At the Prague Academy, Doerell had perfected his painting skills to such an extent that he could live off the sale of his pictures. In 1859 he settled in Aussig and in 1863 married the town's daughter Minna Wolf. Doerell died in 1877 of tuberculosis .

Doerell traveled to the eastern Ore Mountains between Komotau and Kulm , the Bohemian Central Mountains and the Elbland above Lobositz in order to find motifs for his landscapes . In addition to painting, Doerell also tried his hand as a graphic artist and lithographer . He also illustrated homeland books and a collection of legends about Schreckenstein Castle . The focus of his work was the area around Teplitz and Aussig, where he also documented the earlier appearance of the landscape before industrialization and the partial destruction by lignite mining with his pictures.

Many of his works have been supported by the firm layer purchased by the city of Usti nad Labem. The Ústí nad Labem museum houses a collection of around 100 Doerell oil paintings.
