Ernst Carl Gottfried Hartmann (born January 8, 1844 in Hamburg , † October 10, 1911 in Vienna ) was a castle actor and theater director .

Life

Hartmann decided to become an actor, albeit against the declared will of his mother and guardian. So he first became a volunteer at a machine factory in Chemnitz, then went to the stage impressed by a guest performance by Max Dawison and made his debut in Reval as “Müllerbursche” in Die Schöne Müllerin , then worked as a choir player and batch player . After his mother's death in 1863, his guardian categorically demanded that he find a practical occupation. Only through the intervention of Heinrich Marr was he allowed to become an actor. Marr recommended him to Heinrich Laube at the Burgtheater in Vienna . There he made his debut as "Paul von Scharfeneck".

He played Ibsen , Goethe , Schiller , Grillparzer , plays by Victorien Sardou , Eugène Scribe , Oscar Blumenthal .

From 1880 Hartmann was also a theater director.

Ernst Hartmann was the son of the restaurateur Martin Hartmann (1799–1857) from Graubünden and of Anna Sophie Catharina, née. Prätz (1804-1862). She came from near Hanover. Martin Hartmann and Peter Jacob Gottfried Brettschneider operated the "Hotel de l'Europe" on Alsterdamm 39 (now Ballindamm ) in Hamburg from November 18, 1846 to December 31, 1856 . Before that, Hartmann was the owner of the Hotel St. Petersburg on Jungfernstieg from 1830 until the Hamburg fire in 1842. In 1868 Ernst Hartmann married the castle actress Helene Schneeberger . Their daughter Emilie Hartmann (1877–1953) married the Austrian industrialist Max von Gutmann (1857–1930) in 1896 . The older daughter Amelie (1872–1958) was with Dr. Carl von Ferstel (1865–1925), a son of Heinrich von Ferstel , was married.

He found his final resting place in the Döblinger Friedhof in Vienna, next to his wife.
