Ernst Rudolf Held (born March 28, 1901 in Saint-Imier ; † August 9, 2005 in Zurich ) was a Swiss gynecologist .

Life

Ernst Held, born on March 28, 1901 in Saint-Imier, grew up in Burgdorf , graduated from high school in Burgdorf before studying medicine at the universities of Bern and Lausanne , which he completed in 1926 with the federal state examination. Subsequently, Held worked as an assistant doctor at the Inselspital in Bern and at the Cantonal Hospital in St. Gallen .

Ernst Held then joined the University Women's Clinic in Geneva, where his academic career began with his habilitation in 1936, where he was appointed senior physician and where he also took over the management of the cytological and biological laboratory. In 1940 he was elected chief physician of the gynecological clinic at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital.

1950 appointed him Zürcher Government to professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical School and director of the Women's Clinic at the Cantonal Hospital . He held these positions until his retirement in April 1971. Ernst Held died on August 9, 2005 at the old age of 104 in Zurich.

Held made special contributions to the fight against cervical cancer . The cytodiagnostics introduced under his leadership for the early detection of this cancer contributed significantly to the decline in mortality from this tumor.
