Ernst Henke (industrialist)
Ernst Henke (born September 1, 1881 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † February 20, 1974 in Essen ) was a German lawyer and manager in the electricity industry .
Life
Henke, the son of a grammar school director, attended grammar schools in Barmen and Bremen , studied law and, after taking the assessor examination in 1909, became legal advisor to Hugo Stinnes . From 1912 to 1945 he was director and legal director of Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke AG (RWE) , in which Stinnes was the main shareholder at the time.
He also acted as a member of the supervisory board of RWE until 1962, Elektrizitäts-AG formerly W. Lahmeyer & Co. , Main-Kraftwerke AG, Roddergrube AG and Westdeutsche Elektrizitätswirtschafts-AG . He was a member of the board of directors of the Reichsverband der Deutschen Industrie , chairman of the specialist group for electrical, gas and waterworks in Germany and board member of the Association of Electricity Companies and a member of the Provisional Reich Economic Council .
On May 1, 1933, he joined the NSDAP in Essen with the entire RWE board .
Art lover and collector
As an art lover, Henke was chairman of the Folkwang Museum Association from 1925 to 1926 and again from 1959 to 1969 . Henke owned a valuable art collection, which he built up especially in the 1930s and 1940s. Among them were Caspar David Friedrich's The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog and Sunset behind the Dresden Court Church and paintings by Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner . Dieter Spethmann called him a great friend of art and antiquity . From 1945 to 1970 Henke was chairman of the board of the Kunstring Folkwang eV association in Essen. In 1964 he founded the Folkwang Foundation Ernst and Elly Henke .
He also maintained professional and social contacts as a member of the Düsseldorf Industry Club .
According to a design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe , Ernst Henke had an extension built on his house in Essen in 1930.
