David Alliance, Baron Alliance , Kt , CBE (born June 15, 1932 in Kashan , Iran ) is a British businessman and politician ( Liberal Democrat ).

life and career

David Alliance (originally: Davoud) was born to Jewish parents in Kashan , Iran and attended the Etahad School in Iran.

He is one-third co-owner and chairman since 1968 ( Chairman ) of the Board of the British catalog mail order company and home shopping -Unternehmens N Brown Group plc , the mainly textiles markets. In July 2012, his resignation was announced.

He is also, along with Sir Harry Djanogly co-founder of Coats Viyella plc, which is now active in 67 countries to the Group Coats plc is one (global market share 22%, 70,000 employees). Coats Viyella's success is largely attributed to David Alliance and Harry Djanogly. Alliance was there from 1975 to 1990 managing director ( chief executive ) and from 1989 to 1999 chairman ( chairman ). In 1956 he became the owner of Thomas Houghton , 1968 by SPIRELLA , 1975 by Vantona , 1983 by Carrington Viyella and 1985 by Coats Paton and Nottingham Manufacturing . From 1991 to 1999 he was Chairman of the Tootal Group .

He was named 267th on the 2009 Sunday Times Rich List as one of the UK's richest men, with an estimated fortune of £ 408 million .

In 2012, Tel Aviv University established a Center for Iran Studies, named after Alliance.

Membership in the House of Lords

Alliance was raised to Life Peer on July 1, 2004 as Baron Alliance , of Manchester in the County of Greater Manchester , and thus became a member of the British House of Lords . There he belongs to the Liberal Democrats . Its official introduction took place on September 13, 2004. He gave his inaugural address on May 23, 2005. It was not until March 10, 2009 that he spoke again for the second reading of the Postal Services Bill . Since then, he has not spoken (as of July 2012). In 2008 he was not present at a single vote. His presence is very irregular.

Since his appointment as a Life Peer , he donated £ 668,872 to the Liberal Democrats through 2011 and an additional £ 20,996.56 as an interest subsidy on loans he granted to the party.

In 1984 Alliance was accepted as Commander (CBE) in the Order of the British Empire . In 1989 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor .

Alliance is active in various bodies, including the Prince's Youth Business Trust , the Council for Industry and Higher Education , the University of Manchester Foundation and the Wiseman Institute . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce , Honorary Fellow of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) (1988) and Honorary Fellow of the Shenkar College of Textile Technology and Fashion in Ramat Gan in Israel . In 1991, Alliance became an Honorary Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute .

Alliance has received several honorary doctorates . In 1989 he became a Doctor of Letters (Hon LLD) from Victoria University of Manchester, and in 1996 from the University of Liverpool . He is also a Doctor of Science (Hon DSc) from Heriot-Watt University (1991) and Legum Doctor (Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa) from the University of Manchester .

He is a companion of the Chartered Management Institute and became a companion of the British Institute of Marketing in 1985 .

Alliance is a director of the Alliance Family Foundation Limited and the Weizmann Institute Foundation . He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Community Security Trust and the Board of Governors of Tel Aviv University. At the Next Century Foundation he is a member of the trustee .

family

Alliance is divorced and has three children (two sons and one daughter), two of whom are adopted. He lives alternately in London and Manchester . In addition to an estate in Didsbury , he also owns an extensive collection of paintings by LS Lowry . Alliance is related to Nigel Alliance .
