Life

After attending school, Hofmann studied ethnography and in 1970 presented his diploma thesis on the subject of the proletariat as a subject of research in bourgeois German folklore . He became a research assistant at the Karl-Marx-Stadt city archive , which was then headed by Gert Richter . In 1987 he was department head at the Institute for Museums in Berlin.

Ernst Hofmann presented several publications in the GDR on epistemological and museum-pedagogical problems, on bibliography and on questions of the history of the workers' movement in Chemnitz and the surrounding area, for example on the reporting system and the action of the united Chemnitz mechanical engineering proletariat in 1850. In 1980 he published Das Chemnitzer Address Book. History and source value. In: The reporting system of the city of Chemnitz in capitalism - Introduction and overview of the inventory of police registration books and the address books in the Karl-Marx-Stadt city archive . After 1990 he devoted himself increasingly to topics related to Sonneberg and the local toy museum , which he had been director of from 1990 to 2007.

In 1981 he published the contribution The Beginnings of Socialist Press and Publishing Activities in Chemnitz in the regional historical contributions from the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . In it he proved that Karl Marx was co-author of a publication published in Chemnitz to popularize his main scientific work Das Kapital and thus had at least a certain connection to the city renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt in his honor in 1953 .
