Ernst Kahn

Ernst Kahn (born March 7, 1884 in Augsburg ; died February 19, 1959 in Jerusalem ) was a German-Israeli banker, journalist, social politician, economist and entrepreneur. As a local politician in Frankfurt am Main , he campaigned primarily for social housing within the framework of the Neues Frankfurt urban development project .

Life

Kahn was a son of the Augsburg textile industrialist Aron Kahn and his wife Flora. After graduating from high school, he completed a two-year technical and commercial apprenticeship and then studied at the Berlin Business School . In 1909 he joined the editorial team of the Frankfurter Zeitung and was editor of the commercial section of the paper until 1920.

From 1921 to 1933 he was a partner in the Frankfurt banking house Lazard Speyer-Ellissen . He was involved in local politics as an honorary city councilor of the SPD and was head of the building planning department from 1928 to 1930. As director of the stock building company for small apartments and the Gartenstadt AG, he is one of the promoters of social housing within the framework of the urban development project Neues Frankfurt . He was chairman of the supervisory boards of numerous companies, including the Farblederfabrik Bonames AG and the Frankfurter Baukasse AG.

He taught at the University of Frankfurt am Main as a lecturer in housing, economics and statistics. Kahn founded the research center for housing in Frankfurt am Main and the unemployed kitchen association . From 1917 he was a member of the board of the Frankfurt Zionist Association and was also a board member of the "Society for Jewish National Education" founded in 1920.

In 1911 Kahn married the teacher Lene Samuel (1891–1953) from Frankfurt , with whom he had four daughters. The family emigrated to Palestine via England and the USA in 1933 , where they lived from 1935. Kahn became head and later a member of the supervisory board of Ata Textiles and worked as a business consultant.

Honors

Kahn was an honorary doctor of the philosophy faculty at the University of Frankfurt. Ernst-Kahn-Strasse in Frankfurt's north-west city is named after him.
