Ernst Licht (born January 6, 1892 in Bremen , † February 3, 1965 in Worpswede ) was a German composer .

Life

The artist from northern Germany was a member of the Worpswede artists' colony . A photo collage made by Werner Rohde in 1949 ( Das Künstlerschiff ) shows light in the circle of well-known Worpswede artists. A portrait of Licht by Fritz Cobet was part of the 3rd German Art Exhibition in Dresden's Albertinum in 1953. The painter Richard Oelze lived in Licht's garden house from 1946 to 1951.

Licht was one of those artists from Worpswede who joined the NSDAP during the time of National Socialism ( membership number 5.767.389).

Licht's grave is located in the Worpsweder cemetery. A street in Worpswede bears his name.

Licht is known for numerous song settings that were popular in the German youth movement at the beginning of the twentieth century, especially songs by Hermann Löns . His simple, folksong-like settings found their way into many folk, traveling and club song books of various political stripes. Licht also set a number of Low German songs to music. Are known u. a. his settings of the lullaby Över de stillen Straten by Theodor Storm and the poem Min Jehann by Klaus Groth , which are part of the lied repertoire of numerous contemporary choirs in various polyphonic movements.
