Ernest Overton

Charles Ernest Overton , also Ernst Overton (born February 25, 1865 in Stretton , Cheshire , England , † January 27, 1933 in Lund , Sweden ) was an English biologist and pharmacologist .

Life

His family moved to Zurich in 1882, where he attended industrial school. From 1884 he studied botany at the University of Zurich . In 1889 he received his doctorate with the dissertation Contribution to the knowledge of the genus Volvox . In 1890 he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer in biology. In 1901 he became an associate professor at the University of Würzburg . In 1907 he was appointed professor of pharmacology at Lund University. He worked there until his retirement in 1930.

Overton worked scientifically on the permeability of cell membranes . After investigations with anesthetics on tadpoles, he observed a connection between the fat solubility of the substances in olive oil and their narcotic effectiveness. This theory later became known as the Meyer-Overton correlation after Hans Meyer of Marburg independently published similar observations.
