Ernst Römer , actually Ernst Roemer-Rosenfeld , pseudonym Ernst Richard , (born December 28, 1893 in Vienna , † 1974 in Mexico City ) was an Austrian - Mexican conductor , music teacher and composer .

Life

Ernst Römer was a student of Guido Adler and Arnold Schönberg in Vienna . From 1922 to 1933 he was a conductor at the Großer Schauspielhaus and the Staatstheater in Berlin . After the Nazis came to power, he lived in Vienna again. After Austria's annexation in 1938, he and his family had to emigrate to Mexico, where he has lived in exile since then and worked as a conductor at the opera in Mexico City . The house of the married couple Irma and Ernst Römer was also a meeting point ("exile salon") for German-speaking exiles such as Egon Erwin Kisch , Anna Seghers , Marcel Rubin ,Ruth Schönthal or the young Plácido Domingo . The Heinrich Heine Club was founded in the Römer house on November 1, 1941 under the presidency of the writer Anna Seghers, and concerts and theater performances were planned. Ernst Römer made a particularly good contribution to his efforts for the works of Austrian modernism. He conducted works by Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schönberg in Mexico . From 1951 he taught at the conservatory. In 1961 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
