Ernst Rau
Ernst Rau (born December 7, 1839 in Biberach an der Riss ; † August 24, 1875 in Stuttgart ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Ernst Rau grew up as the son of a master glazier in Biberach an der Riss. After attending secondary school and advanced training school, he received drawing lessons from the Biberach painter Johann Baptist Pflug . From 1855 he attended the Stuttgart art school with Professor Theodor Wagner . After graduating, he visited Berlin and Paris .
On August 25, 1875, the 36-year-old artist was found dead in his bed in his bachelor apartment in Stuttgart. He had died of a hemorrhage .

- In 1863 he designed the Stuttgardia Fountain in Stuttgart, which was built in 1864 and destroyed in the Second World War .
- His first major work in 1865 was the bronze Uhland bust in Stuttgart at the Liederhalle, which has stood on Uhlandshöhe since 1955 .
- In 1868 he designed a bronze bust of Karl Pfaff for Esslingen am Neckar , which stands on the Maille .
- He created numerous groups of figures in Stuttgart and also for the portal of Zurich's main train station .
- It was not until 1876 that his most famous work, the Schiller monument on the Schillerhöhe in Marbach am Neckar, was erected; the head of the bronze Schiller statue follows the famous Schiller head by the sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker .
