Theodor Wagner (sculptor)
Theodor Wagner , from 1854 by Wagner (born March 21, 1800 in Stuttgart ; † July 10, 1880 there ), was a German classicist sculptor and professor of sculpture.
Theodor Wagner devoted himself to sculpture in Johann Heinrich Dannecker's studio from 1814 to 1823 and then went to Rome , where, under Bertel Thorvaldsen's direction, he created a marble statue of Saint Luke for the grave chapel of Queen Katharina von Württemberg (died 1819) on the Rotenberg near Cannstatt .
In 1826 he returned to Stuttgart and decorated both the city and the villas and castles in the area with numerous works, including the muses for the Wilhelma Theater in Cannstatt, the ore statues of the four estates and the reliefs for the anniversary column on the Schloßplatz in Stuttgart , a penitent Magdalena, a marble statue of Rebekah, the figures of a tailor and a reaper and numerous busts are to be emphasized.
He is still remembered today by two portrait busts: the marble version of the Schiller bust modeled by Dannecker in 1805 and the Hauff bust for which Wagner visited the writer Wilhelm Hauff in 1827 shortly before his death.
Theodor Wagner died in Stuttgart on July 10, 1880.
In 1854 Wagner was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , with which the ennoblement was associated.
Theodor Wagner's students included Albert Güldenstein , Wilhelm Rösch and Hermann Bach .
