Ernst Sagewka

Ernst Sagewka (born January 10, 1883 in Nikolaihorst , Masuria , † August 22, 1959 in Bielefeld ) was a German expressionist painter and graphic artist .

Life

On January 10, 1883, Ernst Sagewka was the third son of the married couple Johann Sagewka (farmer, born October 4, 1848 - January 10, 1922) and Charlotte (née Maletzki, housewife, * January 20, 1851 - † November 9, 1931 ) born in Nikolaihorst, East Prussia .

Ernst Sagewka completed an apprenticeship as a painter with a Dornberg church painter from 1901 to 1904 . He entered the Bielefeld technical school of the painters' guild and was taught by Ludwig Godewols . In 1907, Sagewka began studying at the Bielefeld School of Crafts and Applied Arts . He was involved in the artist group "Rote Erde", founded in 1909, together a. a. with Peter August Böckstiegel , Erich Lossie , Heinz Lewerenz and Victor Tuxhorn . In 1911 Ernst Sagewka learned the technique of fresco painting from the history painter and restorer Joseph Langer in Breslau .

After his time in Breslau, Sagewka spent the time studying in Holland , where he met the English, French and Dutch and also found international recognition. Stations were u. a. Rotterdam and The Hague . The oil painting “Port motif from Rotterdam”, created in 1913, also dates from this period.

After the First World War , where he was deployed to the front in Poland and France, Sagewka settled as a freelance artist in Bielefeld, moved back into his parents' house and worked there in his studio. On December 24, 1920 he married his cousin Luise Maletzki.

In order to avert an occupational ban and other reprisals, Sagewka joined the " Reich Chamber of Culture - Reich Chamber of Fine Arts" on May 1, 1937 . However, membership did not prevent some of his paintings from being confiscated as degenerate art on August 23, 1937 .

post war period

After the destruction of the war, the studio was rebuilt from 1947 to 1948 from the ruins of the house at Heidsiekstraße 8. Ernst Sagewka worked there until his death. In 1953, in addition to a collective exhibition, he had a comprehensive solo exhibition with 72 paintings , watercolors and drawings in the Städtisches Kunsthaus Bielefeld. Ernst Sagewka died on August 22, 1959 at the age of 77.

Honors

From November 28, 1982 to January 16, 1983 Sagewka was honored with a solo exhibition of 126 pictures in the Kulturhistorisches Museum an der Welle in Bielefeld on the occasion of his 100th birthday. This was the last solo exhibition dedicated to the artist.
