Ernst Scherzer (born October 5, 1937 in Schöneck / Vogtl. ) Is a former German ski racer . Along with Eberhard Riedel , he is one of the most successful alpine skiers in the GDR .

Scherzer started in 1955 for the SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal club , where he was trained by Joachim Loos. In 1958 he won the first of his eleven titles as GDR champion in the giant slalom. On his international debut in January 1958, he fell 150 meters after the start in the downhill race in Kitzbühel . He started at the World Championships in Bad Gastein , where he took 34th place in the downhill, 42nd place in slalom and 24th place in the combination. In the combination in Wengen in 1959, he finished 14th and in the Kandahar race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 7th place. Through his achievements in the winter of 1959/60 in the races in Adelboden , Wengen and Kitzbühel, he qualified for the joint German team for the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley , where he was not used as a substitute.

His best placings in international races were third place in an FIS A slalom in Kleinwalsertal in 1963 and second place in a giant slalom in Lanersbach in Zillertal in 1965. At the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , he came 13th in slalom.

Scherzer's career as an active ski racer ended abruptly when, in 1969, due to a fundamental decision in the GDR, the promotion of alpine racing was stopped. He then became a coach and from 1976 worked as a wax expert for the GDR national ski jumping team. From July 1977 to 1989, as " IM Berg", he provided information about athletes and fellow officials to the GDR Ministry for State Security . He lives in Oberwiesenthal .

He was married to Heidi Schuffenhauer (1940-2017), a former luge athlete who started in the junior division together with the later Olympic champion Thomas Köhler in mixed doubles.
