Tux is a municipality with 1959 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Schwaz and in the judicial district of Zell am Ziller in the Austrian state of Tyrol .
geography
The municipality of Tux is located in the rear and largest part of the Tuxertal , which separates the Tux Alps ( orographic left) from the Zillertal Alps (right) and is one of the four reasons of the Zillertal , which branches off to the southwest near Mayrhofen . The Tuxertal is more densely populated than the other areas of the Zillertal, as the climatic conditions are also somewhat more favorable. The municipality of Tux extends up to the 3476 m high glaciated Olperer and up to the 2338 m high Tuxer Joch , a crossing between the Zillertal and the Wipptal that was very popular in the early days . Other prominent elevations in the municipality are the 3288 m high Gefrorene-Wand -spitze and the 3231 m high Hoher Riffler . The highest farms are at 1630 m .
Districts
The village of Tux consists of the five districts of Tux-Vorderlanersbach (with the hamlets Mountain, Schöneben, Außerrettenbach and Gemais.), Tux-Lanersbach, Juns , Madseit and Hintertux , the amendment of the town name of Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach in Tux-Lanersbach and Tux- Vorderlanersbach was announced on January 25, 2005 by the state government. Before that there was the municipality of Tux for some time , but no place with that name.
Tux-Vorderlanersbach
( 1257 m above sea level ) is the first district on the road from Finkenberg. The hamlets of Schöneben and Gemais are located on the mountainside above the village. The Gemais peasantry at 1450 m was placed under monument protection due to its stylistic unity, which dates back to the 17th century. It developed from a former Schwaighof . The Geiseljoch at an altitude of 2292 m on the way into the Inntal valley used to be a much traveled route for exchanging goods to the markets in Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck . From Vorderlanersbach, a single-cable circulating gondola opens up the Rastkogel ski area, which is connected to the neighboring Penken and Eggalm ski areas .
Tux-Lanersbach
The center ( 1281 m above sea level ) is about two kilometers behind Vorderlanersbach and forms the cultural and social center of the community of Tux. Both districts now merge seamlessly. Lanersbach is the seat of both the Tux community and the parish that has existed since 1891. The parish church of St. Thomas in Lanersbach was built in 1686 in place of an earlier Gothic church and redesigned in Baroque style in 1750. The headquarters of the tourism association, the TuxCenter event center, the elementary and middle school and the childcare center are also located in Lanersbach. A small farmer's museum has been set up in the Höllensteinhütte (Zillertal Alps) south of the village on the 1710 m high Loschbodenalm. A gondola leads to the ski and hiking area of Eggalm across the valley (Tuxer Alps).
Juns
( 1340 m above sea level ) is a long village about 2 km into the valley behind Lanersbach. It consists of a few smaller hotel buildings and residential buildings. A foam mill, in which the barley grown here was ground a few decades ago, is worth seeing. Two toboggan runs approx. 5 km long, which lead down from the Höhlensteinhütte and the Grieralm, end in Juns. The lanes are illuminated so that evening tobogganing is possible.
Madseit
( 1402 m above sea level ) lies behind the district of Juns and is a small settlement with a few hotels, guest houses and residential buildings. Behind the small settlement, at the confluence of the Madseitbach and the Tuxerbach, the valley narrows.
Hintertux
( 1493 m above sea level ) is in the rearmost part of the valley, at the foot of the Hintertux Glacier (the only year-round ski area in Austria), and is framed by mountains and glaciers. It consists of hotels, inns and a few farmhouses. The Church of the Assumption of Mary was completed in 1952 instead of a previous building that was blown up in 1941.
The highest thermal bath in Europe is located in Hintertux with various medicinal springs. In the immediate vicinity of the Spannagelhaus is the Spannagel Cave , which is over 10 km in length and is the largest natural cave in the Central Alps . The listed cave can be visited under expert guidance.
The only year-round ski area in Austria with a wide range of lifts is located on the Tuxer Ferner. The village is the starting point for numerous hikes and high-alpine tours. The ski season on the Hintertux Glacier starts in the autumn months. The Hintertux Glacier ski area is part of the Zillertal 3000 ski area .
Hintertux has 178 inhabitants (as of 2006). Until 1926 it belonged to the community of Schmirn am Brenner.

history
The valley was first mentioned in a document in 1280.
The Tux valley was already explored in prehistoric times, as is shown by finds from the Middle Stone Age . The first inhabitants of the valley were probably Breonen belonging to the tribe of Rhaetians count and Wipptal settled.
Shepherds and mountain farmers settled the valley from the Schmirntal via the Tuxer Joch and cultivated it through their clearing activities . In 889 the Tuxer Tal and other parts of the Zillertal came to the Archdiocese of Salzburg . In 1280 the name Tux ( Tukkes ) was first mentioned in a document. Originally a pure water designation, the name was transferred to the valley. It is probably derived from the Indo-European language root "teg", which means to run, flow, melt away. The first farms were Schwaighöfe that their interest in natural history had to deliver.
The furthest valley between Lanersbach and Hintertux was until 1438 a fiefdom of the court of Matrei am Brenner and later Steinach am Brenner . Until 1926 Hintertux belonged to the community of Schmirn. In 1926 Hintertux merged with Lanersbach and the main team Lämperbichl to form the municipality of Tux.
Culture and sights
Hintertux Natural Ice Palace on the Hintertux Glacier. Guided tours with the aspects of science and adventure through 40 m long parts of a crevasse 25 m below the slope of the Frozen Wall.
economy
Agriculture
Agriculture is still practiced on the meadows and pastures of the Tuxertal, even if most of the farms only continue to do so as a sideline.
tourism
Tourism with numerous catering and accommodation businesses is the most important economic activity in the valley. A total of three ski areas were opened up for ski tourism: in 1961 first the Eggalm area, from 1968 the Hintertux Glacier and from 1984 the Rastkogel, which was connected to the Penken ski area by an aerial tramway from 2001. In the 2000s in particular, capacities were massively increased in all ski areas through the expansion of the lift infrastructure. The Hintertux Glacier has been operated as a year-round ski area from the start. The merging of the Tux ski areas in the direction of Finkenberg and Mayrhofen (Penken) is just as important for the region. After Mayrhofen, Tux has the second highest number of overnight stays in the Zillertal.
Magnesite mill
From 1927 to 1976 the Tux magnesite mine , the highest in Europe, existed about 500 m above Vorderlanersbach . In surface mining and tunnel degradation was there up to 400 workers magnesite won. Special cable cars for people and material transport connected the plant with Lanersbach and the loading station in the Zillertal near Mayrhofen . A small settlement with apartments, a school, a grocery store, a cinema etc. for the employees and their families was built on the Schrofenalm, about 500 m from the plant. After ceasing operations in 1976, the plant was completely dismantled and renatured. Only the Barbara Chapel, built in 1947 according to plans by Hubert Prachensky with frescoes by Max Weiler , and two former residential buildings, the "Schrofenhäuser", have survived.
traffic
Tux can be reached from Mayrhofen via Tuxer Straße (L 6). There is a bus service from Mayrhofen station of the Zillertalbahn . The closest ÖBB train station is Jenbach , which is also the departure station for the Zillertalbahn. The free Tux sports bus runs during the day between Vorderlanersbach and Hintertux within the Tux Valley. In the winter months there is also a nightliner for a fee until 2 a.m.
