Ernst Sompek

Ernst Sompek (born June 11, 1876 in Salzburg ; † August 2, 1954 there ) was a Salzburg composer , choir director and school director. He composed the Salzburg national anthem .

Life

Ernst Sompek was the youngest of three children of the teacher Franz Xaver Sompek. He also became a primary school teacher. At that time he was already studying composition with Joseph Friedrich Hummel , who was the director of the Salzburg Liedertafel at the time, and was also the choirmaster of the Hummel Dam singing association.

In 1912 Sompek took over the management of the Salzburg Liedertafel from his teacher Hummel and led the choir until 1937. In 1928 he set the Salzburg national anthem written by Anton Pichler to music. The Salzburg Liedertafel named him honorary chorister.

In 1932 he was awarded the title of school councilor and in 1937 he was honored with the title of professor.

Sompek's first wife, Karoline Sedlaczek, daughter of Rev. Franz Sedlaczek, died in 1925. In 1929 Sompek married Gusti Büchlmann, daughter of a Gnigler school director. After her death in 1938 he married Margarete Welz a third time.

Sompek is buried in the Maxglan city cemetery.

Ernst-Sompek-Strasse in the Salzburg district of Riedenburg was named after him.
