Ernst Vollert (born July 27, 1855 in Jakobshagen , Pomerania; † April 12, 1931 in Berlin ) was a German publisher and bookseller .

Live and act

After attending the higher middle school in Stargard , he completed a four-year bookselling apprenticeship in the same place from 1869. He then worked in the retail book trade in Berlin and Bromberg. In 1882 he switched to the publishing book trade and became collective authorized signatory at Paul Parey's publishing house in Berlin, which was specifically geared towards agriculture and the natural sciences. In 1888 he was employed as managing director, from 1891 to 1928 as co-owner (alongside Paul Parey) of the Weidmann publishing house , which was primarily devoted to classical studies. In addition to the handbooks for classical antiquity, this included the publishing supervision of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica , the Monumenta Germaniae Paedagogica , the Regesta Pontificum Romanorum , the Codex Theodosianus and the Göttingen scholars advertisements . In addition, R. Gaertner's school book publisher was taken over in 1903.

Vollert was a member of the Association of Younger Booksellers Krebs (1884–1886 as Chairman), the Association of Berlin Members of the Stock Exchange Association (1894 as Chairman), the Corporation of Berlin Booksellers (1900–1905 and 1912–1917 as Chairman) and the German Stock Exchange Association Bookseller in Leipzig (1907–1910 as chairman). He was also a member of the Prussian Literary Expert Chamber . For his services to science he was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1902 and an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Heidelberg in 1924 . Furthermore, he was honored in 1922 by the Berlin Academy of Sciences with the silver Leibniz Medal .

Ernst Vollert died in Berlin in 1931 at the age of 75 and was buried in the old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . In the course of the leveling of the cemetery carried out by the National Socialists in 1938/1939, Vollert's remains were reburied in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf near Berlin. His grave there has been preserved.
