Life
Wermke took part in the First World War from 1914 to 1918 , most recently as an officer . He then studied history and classical philology at the University of Königsberg and doctorate to Dr. phil. In 1921 he became a volunteer and in 1922 a library assistant at the University Library of Marburg and at the State and University Library in Königsberg . In Königsberg he became librarian in 1926 and first library councilor in 1928.

By advocating National Socialism , Wermke was appointed director of the Wroclaw City Library in 1933. At the Library Day in 1934, he gave a lecture entitled “The German Libraries in the East” his views on the eastward expansion of the empire and described the Slavic peoples as primeval enemies of the Germans. He adopted the National Socialist rhetoric in order to protect library work from "foreign cultural influences". The academic libraries would have to "serve homeland and folk, blood and soil". In 1942 he became a member of the Reich Advisory Board for Libraries in Berlin. During the Second World War he took part in the campaign in the West and was sent to Paris to “protect” the French libraries . In 1945 he became a colonel in the reserve.
Released from Soviet captivity in 1950 , Wermke was appointed director of the library at the Technical University of Munich in 1952 . In 1977 he received the East Prussian Landsmannschaft culture award .
