The Fennica is a Finnish multi-purpose icebreaker and the type of vessel consists of two vessels, the Fennica and Nordica , existing Fennica class. The ships are used as ice breakers on the Baltic Sea in winter and as suppliers for offshore facilities in summer. The hull and the drive are optimized for the ice break, the superstructures resemble those of a utility.
The ships with a length of 116 meters and a width of 26 meters with a draft of 8.4 meters were built at the Finnish shipyard Finnyards for the Finnish Shipping Enterprise (FINSTASHIP). The Fennica entered service in 1993. The keel-laying of the ship took place on April 21st, the launch on September 4th, 1992. The sister ship , the Nordica , followed in 1994. She was laid down on January 25, 1993, and was launched on June 18.
technical description
The ships' diesel-electric machinery has an output of 15 megawatts, which means a maximum speed of around 16 knots in open water. The bollard pull is given as 230 tons.
Four large diesel generators with a total of 21,000 kW for generating electricity are installed in the fuselage . The ships are powered by two pod drives with fixed propellers, which are attached aft under the ship and can be controlled independently of each other. The ships also have three bow thrusters with controllable pitch propellers .
There is space for a total of 77 people on board. The ships are manned with up to 27 people, depending on the mission.
