Ernst Wiemann

Ernst Wiemann (born December 21, 1919 in Stapelburg ; † May 17, 1980 in Hamburg ) was a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Ernst Wiemann was interested in music and played the accordion and violin as a young boy. At the age of 17 he took singing lessons and received his first engagement as a soloist in Kiel in 1940 , then in Stralsund in 1941. Another year later he got a soloist contract at the Volksoper Berlin. However, he was no longer able to perform there because he was drafted into the war on the Eastern Front.

After the Second World War, Ernst Wiemann took singing lessons again and was committed to the Gelsenkirchen Opera in the 1950/51 season. From 1955 to 1957 he sang at the Nuremberg Opera . From 1957 until his death in 1980 he was permanently engaged at the Hamburg State Opera .

In 1965 he was awarded the title of Chamber Singer by the Senate of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in recognition of his artistic merits .

His international career began in the late 1950s. From 1961 to 1969 he performed at the Metropolitan Opera (MET) in New York. As an inaugural role, he sang King Heinrich in Lohengrin by Richard Wagner . With constant success he sang the great German bass parts, especially in the Wagner class.

In the course of his singing career he traveled to the major opera houses and festival venues of the Old and New World: Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, ​​London, Edinburgh, Florence, Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Milan, Brussels, Vienna, Lausanne, Nice , Toulouse, Copenhagen, Venice, Rome, Bologna, Bordeaux, Marseille, Boston, New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit.

Ernst Wiemann became known nationwide through numerous recordings. He can be heard in various recordings and radio recordings, especially MET performances.

In the television films produced for NDR he can be seen and heard as Rocco in Fidelio (1968) and as Veit Pogner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1970).

In May 1980, Ernst Wiemann suddenly died of heart failure at the age of 60. His grave is in the Reichelsdorf forest cemetery in Nuremberg.
