Ernst Wilhelm Wolf (born February 25, 1735 in Großenbehringen near Gotha , Thuringia , † December 1, 1792 in Weimar ) was a German court music director , pianist and composer .

Life

Ernst Wilhelm Wolf first attended high schools in Eisenach and Gotha. In 1755 he went to study at the University of Jena . Here he mainly dealt with music and, who had already worked as choir prefect in Gotha , was given the management of the “ Collegium musicum ”, which gave him the opportunity to perform his own compositions. Via Leipzig and Naumburg he came to Weimar, where Duchess Anna Amalie hired him as a piano teacher. In 1761 he was appointed concertmaster and organist of the ducal chapel and in 1772 he was appointed court conductor.

In 1770 he married a daughter of the violinist Franz Benda , Maria Carolina (1742-1820), a singer and harpsichordist, with whom he undertook a successful concert tour to the Berlin court ( see also: Benda (family) ). He is significantly influenced by the piano works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the sacred vocal works of Carl Heinrich Graun.

Wolf wrote works for the stage (including around 20 Singspiele, so-called “operettas”), secular and sacred cantatas, oratorios, passions, songs, writings on music (notable is his textbook Musical Lessons , Dresden 1788), 12 quartets for strings (published in print : 3 quartets op. 1 [B flat major, E flat major, D major; Berlin and Amsterdam 1779], 3 quartets op. 2 [C major, A major, G major; Berlin and Amsterdam 1781; the 3 Quartet is for flute, violin, viola and bass], 3 quartets op. 3 [B flat major, E flat major, G minor; Speyer 1785]; handwritten: Sonata in D major [around 1780]; Quatro d- Minor [1781 {?}], Quatro C major [1788], Quartetto C major [1789]), some of which are committed to the practice of figured bass, and other chamber music works, symphonies, partitas and solo concerts (mostly for harpsichord).
