Ernst von Kotzau (* before 1540, † around 1583 ) was the Brandenburg-Kulmbach bailiff in Streitberg and captain on the mountain and in Bayreuth .

Ernst came from the younger main line of the von Kotzau family with half of the headquarters in today's Oberkotzau and the castle in Fattigau . After the genealogist Alban von Dobenck , the younger main line was founded by Friedrich, son of Hans von Kotzau . Hans Berthold, Beringer , David and Ernst are sons of Georg Wolf von Kotzau . Ernst married Sibylla von Dobenck in 1555 , according to Johann Gottfried Biedermann , two sons and a daughter are said to have resulted from the marriage.

Ernst and his brother Beringer were registered as students at the University of Leipzig in 1540 . The marriage with Sibylla von Dobenck led to the takeover of the Brandsteiner Schloss and its extensive possessions. Sibylla's father, Wilhelm von Dobenck, died in 1548 without male descendants, so that his wife and daughter raised claims against the agnates and therefore kept the possessions for a long time.

From 1560 Ernst serving the Marquis was temporarily bailiff in Streitberg , acting head of the captaincy on the Gebürg and Captain to Bayreuth. His immediate predecessors as captain on the mountain were Georg III. Landgrave von Leuchtenberg and Wilhelm von Grumbach , followers of Albrecht Alcibiades .
