history
Kurt Ernsting laid the foundation stone for the company in 1967 with the opening of the first “minipreis” self-service shop in the laundry room of the textile shop that his parents ran in their home in Coesfeld-Lette. A year later he founded the "Minipreis Ernsting Handels-GmbH" and began to continuously build up a chain of branches. In 1971 the first administration building and a warehouse were built in Coesfeld-Lette to supply what are now 40 Minipreis branches. In 1972 the company was renamed “miniladen” and in 1985 “Ernsting's miniladen”. The textile supplier was named Ernsting's family in 1990.
From 1983 to 1985 the company engaged the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to build a new distribution center in Coesfeld-Lette; The project was one of the first orders from the future star architect. In order to be able to supply the new branches in the eastern German states more quickly, a distribution center opened in Klieken near Dessau in 1993 . In 1999 a regional center was established in Schwarzenbek near Hamburg as a truck transshipment point.
In 2001, a new service center designed by the English architect David Chipperfield was completed in Coesfeld-Lette, and since then the company headquarters with administration and development department has been located here. In 2003 the Ernsting's family online shop went online. As part of a renewal of the brand identity, the word and image trademark "Ernsting's family - Recommended by happy families" was registered in 2009; In the same year the company introduced a revised corporate design for the website and branches of Ernsting's family. In 2010 the 1,500th Ernsting's family branch opened in Karlsruhe and a little later in Vienna the first store in Austria.
The company founder Kurt Ernsting died on December 7th, 2011 at the age of 82. Ernsting had withdrawn from operational business in 2006.
In 2012, a new high-bay pallet warehouse with a facade designed by the glass artist Nabo Gaß went into operation on the premises of the company headquarters in Coesfeld-Lette . Since 2013, the Ernsting's family web shop has also been available via the mobile shop.
