The song consists of two four-line verses and a longer chorus, which confronts an undefined political authority with a loss of trust ( “We don't trust you anymore” ). In between the hook line “Pow! Pow! Erupt and matter! ” Repeated several times. The music video and introductory text on Moby's website make it clear who the text is addressed to.

“The racist and antiquated far right are encroaching upon democratic freedoms in almost every country in the western world. We need to respond by protesting, supporting progressives, and most important: voting. "

“Racists and the antiquated right wing are spreading in almost every country in the western world. We have to defend ourselves against this by protesting, supporting progressives and, most importantly, voting. "

Music video

The video for Erupt & Matter was on January 19, 2017 one day before the inauguration of Donald Trump , published. It shows alternately images of various anti-democratic rulers or right-wing politicians and violent demonstrations in quick succession . Large white and red letters bring the text of the chorus to the fore. You can also see Moby and his band. Ultimate-Guitar summarized the clip as "montage of political unrest" ("montage of political unrest").

The politicians shown include Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un , Baschar al-Assad , Nigel Farage , Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , Benito Mussolini , Rodrigo Duterte , Frauke Petry , Matteo Salvini , Norbert Hofer , Marine Le Pen , Geert Wilders , Boris Johnson , Mike Pence , David Duke , Mitt Romney , Newt Gingrich and Rudy Giuliani . Commentators particularly criticized the absence of Vladimir Putin .

reception

Consequence of Sound praised the song as one of the outstanding tracks on the album and described it as "an energy boost, supported by tribal percussion and a passionate singing against the mighty". The Rolling Stone certified the song an "anthemic" character.

Although Moby had spoken out against Donald Trump during the election campaign via social media , he received an invitation to DJ to an inauguration ball. Unsurprisingly, Moby declined the offer, but made people sit up and take notice by saying that he would hang up if Trump published his tax return .

The Austrian FPÖ politician Norbert Hofer , third President of the National Council and candidate for the office of Federal President in 2016, was indignant about his presence in the music video and said that he would not allow it to dissuade him "a millimeter" from his path. Moby responded with a Facebook posting in which he regretted that humanity was unable to learn from the mistakes of the 20th century. He offered to remove Hofer from the clip if he should "renounce racism and right-wing business populism".

The song has not yet made it into the charts .
