The Volkshochschule (VHS) Berlin Mitte is one of the twelve adult education centers in Berlin. It is a department of the Office for Further Education and Culture of the District Office Mitte of Berlin . It is currently headed by Michael Weiß. As a public institution for adult and further education, it is supposed to guarantee the basic provision of further education according to § 123 of the School Act of the State of Berlin.

In Berlin, the adult education centers were re- established in 1945 after they had been abolished or brought into line under National Socialism. For a long time they had no buildings of their own, but held classes in classrooms and the like The VHS Berlin Mitte emerged with the administrative reform of January 1, 2001 from the merger of the former Berlin districts Mitte , Wedding and Tiergarten . It now covers the area of ​​the following six Berlin districts: Mitte , Wedding , Tiergarten , Moabit , Hansaviertel and Gesundbrunnen .

The so-called "Open Program" can be booked by anyone. It includes events and courses from the following eight program areas (PB):

The courses from the “Integration” department are aimed at immigrants . The focus here is on learning the German language . The various courses, such as B. Integration courses, German courses for parents, German courses for refugees or the parents' academy are based on different legal bases and are financed by state funds, participant fees and / or third-party funds.

The transition to the open program is the subject of practice and research.

The VHS Berlin Mitte has been accredited by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to offer teacher qualifications since 2005 . This additional qualification for German as a second language is required by the BAMF for teachers who want to teach in integration courses in accordance with the Immigration Act and who cannot prove that they are qualified according to the admission criteria of the Federal Office. It is one of currently 18 approved providers (as of September 26, 2019).
