Erwin Domanig

Erwin Domanig (born March 21, 1898 in Klosterneuburg , † May 6, 1985 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian surgeon . He was Austrian governor of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Life

Erwin Domanig, son of Carl Domanig and Irmgard Domanig, b. Müller, studied medicine at the University of Vienna and became a Dr. med. PhD . He married Maria Schwan on July 22, 1926 in Maria Laach ; The children Maria, Helene, Erwin, Engelbert and Karl emerged from the marriage.

After assistant and specialist training as a surgeon at the university clinics in Vienna and Graz, he was appointed primary surgeon at the St. Johann Hospital in Salzburg in 1934, succeeding Ernst von Karajan. On May 21, 1946, the federal government approved the award of the title of associate professor. In 1950 he became director of the St. Johann Hospital, i.e. the Salzburg State Hospitals. These were significantly expanded under his leadership, starting with anesthesiology (with Volkmar Feurstein as first primary), continuing with orthopedics (Hannes Hofer), urology (Gärtner) and vascular surgery (Konrad Prenner). Erwin Domanig also built up a second surgical department (with Josef Hohenwallner as the first primary in this second surgery). Until his retirement he was the hospital director and head of the first surgical department of the Salzburg State Hospitals.

One of his major accomplishments was to preserve blood for transfusions; to this end, he founded the first blood bank in Austria in Salzburg. He also founded the home nursing service in Salzburg.

In 1947, an Austrian Medical Conference was founded on his initiative , which has been operating as the Van Swieten Society with its headquarters in Vienna since 1948 . 1961/62 he was President of the Austrian Society for Surgery . In 1966 he was made an honorary member of the Salzburg Medical Association .

He is the namesake of the Hofrat Erwin Domanig scholarship proposed by Wendt for advanced training for doctors of the Van Swieten Society and the namesake of the Erwin Domanig Prize for excellent scientific work in the field of blood group serology and transfusion medicine.

Erwin Domanig was invested on August 25, 1952 in the collegiate church of Nonnberg in Salzburg as Komtur with a star in the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He was appointed governor in Austria by Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Canali . From 1951 to 1954 he was regent, from 1954 to 1961 governor of the Austrian monastic province, then honorary governor. He was also chief commander in Salzburg from 1951 to 1958. Domanig, together with the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Andreas Rohracher , who was also Grand Prior of the Austrian Lieutenancy, provided essential impulses for the development of religious life and is considered the founder of the official Lieutenancy in Austria. During his tenure, the commanderies in Salzburg, Vienna, Linz and Graz were established.
