Erwin Küsthardt

Erwin Küsthardt (born January 23, 1867 in Hildesheim , † July 6, 1901 in Rome ) was a German painter and sculptor .

life and work

Küsthardt, son of the sculptor Friedrich Küsthardt , studied from 1885 to 1894/95 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Heinrich Lauenstein , Hugo Crola , Adolf Schill and Peter Janssen . In 1898 Küsthardt received the Grand State Prize of the Prussian Academy of the Arts . In 1899/1900 and 1901 Küsthardt stayed at the Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome because of his Rome scholarship , where he died in July 1901. Erwin Küsthardt was buried in the Protestant cemetery in Rome .

During his short creative phase due to his lifetime, he mainly created pictures with elements of religious influence, such as the altarpiece "Peace be with you" in the Johanneskirche in Herne-Eickel . Some of the wall paintings in the " Marching Hall " of the Hermann Allmers House in Rechtenfleth were also made by him . His last major work is the mural Arrival of Kaiser Wilhelm I at Potsdamer Bahnhof after the declaration of war in 1870 in the auditorium of the Erfurt grammar school. In 1902, an estate exhibition was dedicated to Küsthardt in the Hildesheim Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum .
