Erwin Raphael McManus (born August 28, 1958 in El Salvador ) is an American Baptist pastor of the Mosaic Church in Los Angeles , teacher and author with Salvadoran roots.

Life

McManus was born Irving Rafael Mesa-Cardona in El Salvador. His family soon emigrated to the United States and he was raised in Florida . His mother remarried in the United States and took the name McManus. McManus graduated from the University of North Carolina , where he received his bachelor's degree; he received his Masters from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth .

After graduating, he began church planting among the poor in the city of Dallas . Around 1990 he was deployed with his brother Alex to advise and renew existing church leadership teams. In 1993 he moved to Los Angeles to pastor the Mosaic Church . He also maintains a network of leadership, and he works at Bethel Seminary as a teacher of future research . He is the senior pastor of Mosaic Church, which includes four local wards in Pasadena , Hollywood , Pomona, and downtown Los Angeles. He founded the Mosaik-Allianz, an association of churches that are breaking new ground in church development. He leads the "Origins" conference, which takes place annually in the Mosaic Church.

McManus has spoken in over 30 countries and introduced and disseminated his innovative approaches to community building in films, articles and magazines. In 2011, he spoke at the Willow Creek Community Church's annual Global Leadership Summit , founded by Bill Hybels . McManus also works with secular psychological and sociological methods such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Gallup Strengths to analyze and change the entrenched behavior patterns of people and the rigid leadership styles in Christian churches. He also founded Awaken , a group of artists, poets and filmmakers to bring creative people together and develop and realize their potential. Because of his unconventional thoughts and approaches, he is counted as part of the emerging church movement. He believes that the traditional Christian churches must be given up and Christianity as a world religion and power factor destroyed in order to create space for a new, unspent Jesus movement.

McManus is married to Kim, they have two children of their own and a foster daughter.
