Erwin Thoma (born February 14, 1962 in Bruck an der Großglocknerstrasse ) is an Austrian forestry and business economist who works as an entrepreneur and author in the field of "tree knowledge and wood innovation". Thoma-Holz GmbH offers u. a. Houses made of unglued solid wood .

Life

Thoma grew up in Bruck ( Pinzgau ) in the state of Salzburg . Out of love for nature, he first became a mountain guide, then a forest ranger in the Eng im Karwendel .

Encounters with Mittenwald violin makers increased his interest in traditional wood processing and traditions that have almost been forgotten. The knowledge of his grandfather Gottlieb Brugger, who worked as a carpenter in the Oberpinzgau near Krimml and built log houses in the alpine rural style, had a great influence on his way of thinking. He gradually implemented these handicraft traditions in his industrial production of puristic wooden houses in a modern way.

After cases of asthma in the family, the company's own wood processing company was converted to production without wood preservatives, without using toxic glues. In doing so, he applies considerations that give moon phase wood better stability, durability and fire resistance.

In 1998, patented glue-free solid wood construction Holz100 has so far (as of 2015) erected over 1000 wooden structures in 33 countries.

Erwin Thoma lives with his wife Karin and two sons and a daughter in Goldegg in Pongau , Austria.

Moonwood

In 1999 Thoma summarized his collected traditions about wood, forest and moon in the book "... I saw you grow", which was translated into several languages. As a result, Thoma applied for funding for a scientific investigation, but was initially unsuccessful. Ernst Zürcher, who works at the ETH Zurich, presented a study in 2003 that was supposed to prove that the durability of felled wood is not moon-phase neutral. This is countered by studies that question the special qualities ascribed to moonwood and justify them with other factors. According to the TU Dresden, moon wood is a popular belief and addresses romantic needs for originality.

Together with the Graz physician Maximilian Moser and the Grossarl Michael R. Rohrmoser, Thoma investigated the extent to which building materials affect the health of the house residents.

The thermal inertia of the wood can be used like a natural air conditioning system that keeps a house cool in summer and protects it from cooling down in winter. For the Austrian film archive , Thoma built the first energy self-sufficient archive building, which is kept constant at 2 ° C all year round.

In the tradition of naturopathy of Paracelsus and Hildegard von Bingen , Thoma attributes "spiritual messages" to different types of wood. He starts with different wood colors and grains and describes trees as living beings with their own soul. In their annual rings, trees record the energies from their lifetime, which work through the wood on people and bring strength, joy, balance and healing. Thoma also describes the sociobiological tasks within the tree family and transfers them to people.
