Hind wings of an Erythrodiplax kimminsi male

Erythrodiplax kimminsi is a species of dragonfly from the subfamily Sympetrinae . The species is distributed north of the Andes in Venezuela , Colombia and Panama . West of the Andes, the species occurs as far as Ecuador .

features

The abdomen of the males measures 19.5 to 23.5 millimeters, in the females it varies between 18.5 and 22.5 millimeters. A good criterion for differentiation from other species is the metallic blue, flattened forehead for the males. Except for the bluish forehead, the females are very difficult to separate from Erythrodiplax fervida .

The transparent hind wings of the males vary in length between 22.5 and 27.5 millimeters. Those of the females are roughly the same length and measure between 23.5 and 28.5 millimeters. At the base of the wings there is a brownish black spot that usually spreads to the first or second antenodal vein. This spot is often missing in the forewing in the males. The wings are slightly brownish at the tips. The pterostigma measures between 2.6 and 3.1 millimeters in both sexes.

Research history

The species is named after an employee of the British Museum who helped Borror to recognize that this coincides with Erythrodiplax unimaculata by sending drawings of the holotype of the species Erythrodiplax erichsoni . As a result of this synonymization, a new name had to be found for a specimen described by Philip Powell Calvert under this name.
