features

Colored male representatives of the Erythrodiplax unimaculata have a basic black color and an abdomen between 19.5 and 23 millimeters long . Females are slightly smaller and measure between 19 and 21 millimeters here. The pattern of the abdomen is similar to that of Erythrodiplax fervida . On the side of the seventh abdominal segment there are spots that do not extend to the dorsal keel. In some individuals, this is accompanied by a pronounced yellow spot on the eighth segment. In addition, the animal looks slightly pollinated from the fourth to the seventh or eighth segment. The abdominal appendages are light brown. Young animals are still brownish to dark brown in color.

In the area of the thorax , yellow predominates in young animals, which is covered with dark brown to brownish black stripes along the folds. Later the accent shifts to greenish brown or dark green and finally to black. Only one stripe on each side of the thorax then remains light. On the transparent wings the base of the wings is yellowish-brown in young animals and black in older animals. The spot is slightly smaller in the fore wing than in the hind wing. These measure between 23 and 29 millimeters for the males and between 19 and 21 millimeters for the females. The wing marks are an average of 3 millimeters in both sexes.

In the case of colored individuals, the face is almost entirely black and a metallic blue veil remains only on the forehead , which in younger animals still determines the color of the forehead. In addition, there are yellowish areas on the side of the eyes in young animals.

Similar species

Most similar are the Erythrodiplax unimaculata , the Erythrodiplax fervida , Erythrodiplax ochracea , Erythrodiplax kimminsi and Erythrodiplax famula . The species can be distinguished from the first two types by the metallic blue hue of the forehead. The Erythrodiplax famula can be distinguished by the size of the wing spot. In addition, all species differ in genital structure .
