Erythrosin is a pink- red food coloring (E 127), chemically the bis- sodium salt of 2,4,5,7-tetraiodine fluorescein . The compound can be classified both in the group of triphenylmethane dyes and of xanthene dyes .

Erythrosine contains a lot of iodine (57.7% iodine). The dye has recently fallen into the twilight due to possible allergy triggering and possible influencing of the thyroid functions (see also iodine intolerance ). The intervention in the thyroid function should z. B. can trigger uncontrolled impulsiveness in hyperactive children.

The use is currently only permitted to a limited extent: in cocktail cherries , emperor cherries , cosmetics (often in lipsticks ), in pet food, for coloring Easter eggs and as a drug additive, e.g. B. in alprazolam and certain methylphenidate preparations. Erythrosine is also occasionally used in dental plaque coloring tablets.
