It rappelt in the box is the sixth studio album by Helge Schneider . It was released in 1995 and followed a shorter hiatus that Schneider took in 1994.

Origin and style

After Schneider had recorded some songs solo on the previous double album There is Rice, Baby , the cooperation with his companion band Hardcore moved more into the foreground again on Es rappelt im Karton . In addition, Schneider recorded some songs with a ten-piece big band called an orchestra , which also included a wind section .

In contrast to previous albums, the live recordings that had filled one of the two CDs on the previous album were omitted. Instead, Helge Schneider alone recorded a few humorous radio plays that were interspersed between the songs. Schneider also added some of these passages on the piano.

The album was completely recorded in the Transatlantic Vanguard Studios in Mülheim-Styrum . Schneider himself directed the recordings, Gero Lamberti was only responsible for the pieces Education, Dripstone Cave and In the Footsteps of Kara Ben Nemsi . The mastering was done by John Cremer.

Once again, Helge Schneider was responsible for the sketch-like drawings in the CD booklet, which this time illustrated some songs. The cover of the album, on the other hand, consists of photographs that Schneider took himself and shows him as a boxer . In a well-known manner, Schneider also provided the photos with handwritten comments.

In terms of style, Schneider remained largely faithful to the style of the previous albums. The music moves in the jazz area, but swing is also used every now and then. There are also echoes of the blues . In contrast to previous albums, there are hardly any cover versions on the album , only Scrapple from the Apple (by Charlie Parker ) and Sex Machine ( originally by James Brown ) fall into this category. Schneider also shot a music video for the latter song . The radio plays on the album are quite similar to earlier works by Schneider and sketch absurd situations with anarchic humor.

Various musicians in the orchestra have previously appeared in Schneider's films; a guest appearance in Texas - Doc Snyder holds the world in suspense had Charly Weiss (as Dear God ), and in 00 Schneider - Jagd auf Nihil Baxter were Sergei Gleithmann as primitive man and white as a tracer pilot to see. Gleithmann has also been part of the Schneiders live band since 2005.

Meanings of some songs

  • Music, music, music is about the importance of music to people.
  • Hope is based on a play of the same name from the movie Texas - Doc Snyder keeps the world in suspense . The original version can be heard on the album Da Humm under the title Huhu .
  • The riddle contains typical joke questions (“What is on the wall, shake hands with everyone?”), Which Schneider has his drummer Peter Thoms answer. If the answer is correct, Schneider praises “Right, right, important!”, If the answer is wrong, he advises “Learn, learn, learn!”. This wording is a reference to earlier times, e.g. B. the mention of these terms is documented on the album Guten Tach .
  • Garden fence is about a man who would like to flirt with women from the fence in his garden, but cannot because the garden is behind the house. In addition, the man is financially ruined, but continues to dream of women.
  • Meisenmann describes the search for food of a titmouse who, because of the needs of his offspring, clashes with his wife. Schneider advises the tit man not to be sad or angry about his fate.
  • Blue Lagoon tells the story of a train journey to Greece , on which the narrator sees a magic ball that is in the possession of an old passenger. The narrator later finds the magic ball while diving, but it is "stolen" from him by a great white shark .
  • Sex Machine is a cover version of the song by James Brown . Instead of the text, Schneider repeats the most important words and passages of the song ("Get up-ah! To the bridge!").
  • Comeback refers to Schneider's break from work and the eponymous comeback that followed .
  • Klapperstrauss parodies the then popular techno in big band instrumentation. The text is very Spartan and Dadaistic ; it essentially only consists of the words "Kla-Kla-Kla-Klapperstrauss", " Piercing !" and "Dance to the music!".
