Peter Thoms (* 1940 in Eutin ) is a German drummer and actor .

Life

Thoms was originally a teacher, but left this profession because of insurmountable difficulties. He describes this step as best for himself and the students. Instead, he began performing as a drummer with various bands.

In the 1990s he became known throughout Germany as a member of the band Hardcore ( Buddy Casino , piano and Farfisa organ, and Peter Thoms, drums) of the Mülheim jazz artist Helge Schneider . Here he took on the role of the grandfather, who was constantly ridiculed by Schneider, whose age was stated to fluctuate between 60 and 120 and to whom the mocking song My Name is Peter, I'm Old was dedicated. With his lively, imaginative drumming, improvised dance interludes and the song A Life Without Marriage Certificate , he quickly became the secret star of the show alongside Schneider. Thoms toured all over Germany with the band for many years and appeared on television, e. B. in Wetten, dass ..? On several of Helge Schneider's albums, Thoms contributed to an acoustically based jazz sound through his playing.

Thoms appeared in all five Schneider films. He presented himself, partly in female roles, as an authentic actor with a slight tendency towards travesty . He had the most important role in the film Texas - Doc Snyder holds the world in suspense , in which he played the opposite of the main role as a "nose man".

Thom is interested in drums and percussion instruments of all kinds. He collects percussion instruments from all over the world. He particularly appreciates Africa's drum tradition and the Indian tabla players. Thoms himself builds and restores all kinds of drums. He is particularly proud of a drum set that is only tensioned with cables, without a piece of metal.

Thoms performed regularly with Dat Kaiser Trio , together with Peter Rübsam (multi-instrumentalist) and Rudi Kontra (tuba) in Düsseldorf . Peter Thoms was also active in the quintet Monk's Trumpf with Rainald Schückens ( bass clarinet ) and Reinhard Glöder ( double bass ) and in the group The Happy Gangstas with Blasius Maltzahn (trumpet) and Rolf Springer (guitar).

In the summer of 2013 he went on tour again with Helge Schneider for the first time in 13 years and played percussion instruments.
