There Humm! is the seventh studio album by Helge Schneider and after “ There is rice, baby ” (1993) his second double album. The album was released in 1997 and, in addition to new songs, also contained numerous pieces that were used as background music for earlier films by and with Helge Schneider. The album has the subtitle "Wurstfachverkäuferin".

Emergence

In contrast to the previous album " Es rappelt im Karton ", Schneider went to much less effort to record the new songs. While a specially compiled big band played on the predecessor, which was released in 1995, "Da Humm" was partly again with the band line-up called "Hardcore" with Buddy Casino on the organ and Peter Thoms on the drums, some pieces are also pure solo recordings. The "Helge Schneider Studios" were used for the recordings, where the material was mixed by Schneider himself.

The new songs can all be found on the first of the two CDs, called “Dahumm!”. Beside these stands the piece "Animals" recorded at a concert in Bochum in 1995. The second CD, called "Memories", has the character of a compilation , as it contains numerous film scores from " Menu Total ", " Texas - Doc Snyder keeps the world in suspense ", " 00 Schneider - Hunt for Nihil Baxter " and " Practice Dr. Hasenbein “some solo pieces and z. Live recordings of various music formations with the participation of Helge Schneider, some of which go back to 1974.

The cover of the album is a photo showing Helge Schneider in a pink suit and sunglasses next to a turntable stereo system with built-in speakers on a one-legged stand. Schneider poses with a green watering can and an electric bass . An explanatory text by Schneider can be read in the CD booklet, as well as numerous historical photos, sketches and newspaper clippings that report on Schneider's early career. The CD case is also illustrated with drawings for the songs “Wurstfachverkäuferin” and “Lord Fuck”.

The album was released in 1997 as a double CD and a double LP on the record label Roof Music and reached a maximum of 24th in the album charts and stayed in the top 100 for six weeks. It was until the 2003 album "Out of Kaktus" Schneider's last studio album with his own material. In the meantime, in addition to some live albums, the cover albums "Eiersalat in Rock" (under the name "Helge & the Firefuckers") and "Jazz" (under the name "Helge & Hardcore") as well as the musical / radio play project " Mendy - the Wusical" have been released ".

"Bonbon aus Wurst" and "Fitze Fitze Fatze" were released as singles. The latter single reached number 51 in the German charts. A running gag on the album is that Helge Schneider keeps playing and interrupting his hit “ Katzenklo ”.

Songs

Film music

As mentioned, some of the songs come from films by and with Helge Schneider. The oldest song among them is "Menu Total", which was recorded in 1985 for the film of the same name by Christoph Schlingensief . In addition to Schneider on the trumpet and Casino on the piano, bassist Dieter Stein and drummer Peter Eisold are involved in this recording .

Versions of the songs "100,000 Roses" and "Don't Be So Petty" were used in the film " Johnny Flash ".

The "00 Schneider" theme played by Schneider on the organ comes from the soundtrack for the film " Texas - Doc Snyder holds the world in breath ". It is based on the theme of the TV series " Kobra, take over ". In addition to the theme song already mentioned, the song “Friends in Need” comes from the film “ 00 Schneider - Hunt for Nihil Baxter ”. Also heard in the western parody was the song “Huhu”, which accompanies the first scenes in the film with the introduction of all the main characters. It is stylistically based on the western soundtracks by Ennio Morricone, which are often worn by guitar and pipes . An adaptation of "Huhu" could be heard on the previous album " Es rappelt im Karton " under the title "Hope", and it was also played live under the title " Titanic " (heard among other things on the live album "Fütternbaren - Live in Dortmund").

" Practice Dr. Hasenbein ”represents the largest share of the film music to be heard on“ Da Humm ”. In addition to the title track “Da Humm”, which was heard in the film in the solo version, “Crazy, Crazy” also comes from the film. The solo version can be heard right at the beginning of the film, whereas the film ends with the band version "in the old people's home". The introduction spoken by Heinz Lober can also be heard on the album. The simple composition "Fitze Fitze Fatze" was also used in the film, but was recorded twice for the album (solo and with the band).

The last film song in chronological order is “Little Asshole”, which was used in the film adaptation of the comic of the same name by Walter Moers . Helge Schneider also took on the role of the grandfather of the title character in the film.

Cover versions

On "Da Humm" there are again many cover versions of jazz standards. These are in detail "Misty" by Erroll Garner , "St. Thomas ”by Sonny Rollins , the“ Blue Bossa ”by Kenny Dorham ,“ Donna Lee ”by Charlie Parker and“ Round About Midnight ”by Thelonious Monk . "Donna Lee" was already covered in 1992 for the album " Guten Tach ", "Round About Midnight" is a live recording from Düsseldorf from 1982, with Schneider playing the saxophone, Wolfgang Hefter piano, Charly Weiss playing the drums and Reinhard Glöder the double bass. In addition, as on “Guten Tach”, there is a relatively free cover version of Louis Armstrong'sWhat A Wonderful World ” called “Wundervolle Welt”.

Schneider interprets the jazz songs in a similar way to the previous albums and often uses vocal interpretations of the melodies.

In recordings from 1974, in which, besides Schneider on the piano, only the drummer Klaus Bartels was involved, the texts of the two folk songs " Die Lindenwirtin " by Rudolf Baumbach and " Vom Hering " (here under the title "Der Hering") by Heinrich Seidel used. “Der Hering” also quotes the melody of the bossa nova standard “Desafinado” by Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Radio plays

With “In der Fleischerei” and “Politiker” there are two radio plays recorded by Schneider alone on the CD. “In the butcher shop” describes the absurd scene of a butcher shop visitor who is not clear about his intention and is provoked to be physical by the butcher. "Politician" is a freely improvised parody of political speeches .

Other songs

In the other songs, Schneider satirically describes various topics, the music being classified between jazz and chanson.

  • "Bonbon made of sausage" is a satirical metaphor for the male sexual organ , which in the lyrics draws women to the side of the narrator.
  • “I press the mouse” parodies hip-hop , with the title line repeated over and over and in slight variations in front of a monotonous rhythm.
  • “Sausage specialist saleswoman”, also recorded solo and with the band, describes the everyday life of the staff at the meat counter in the supermarket.
  • "Blub Blub" describes the ultimately fatal attempt by a goldfish to break out of its aquarium by using a hammer. Schneider countered the grief over the death of all fish due to the destruction of the aquarium with the transition to a version of "Fitze Fitze Fatze".
  • "My mother" is - in continuation of the "butter song" from "There is rice, baby" - a song which first mentions the mother , who is helpful in all situations , and then relates an almost identical text to the wife. On this recording Schneider played all the instruments himself, including the drums.
