00 Schneider - The Hunt for Nihil Baxter is Helge Schneider's second feature film and was released in 1994 . He himself wrote the script and the music, directed and played the main and several supporting roles.

action

The funny clown Bratislav Metulskie is found dead in the Apollo Circus. Commissioner 00 Schneider , who is already retired, is asked by the police chief to take over this sensitive case. Schneider and his old assistant Körschgen ( Helmut Körschgen ) are soon on the trail of the murderer: Nihil Baxter, a passionate, somewhat crazy art collector who has no social contacts.

The superintendent is investigating at the circus , where he is told that Metulskie sold his car to Baxter before the murder, and pays Baxter a visit. However, he wants to use a painting that he allegedly painted at the time of the crime (April 1, 2002, 10 a.m.) and shows a crooked church sinking into a lake of mist, to create a false alibi. But assistant Körschgen quickly finds out that the church in question, unlike in Baxter's picture, does not have a date display and therefore Baxter's alibi cannot be correct. When Nihil Baxter stole a sculpture from Dr. Hasenbein wants to flee to Rio by plane , the inspector and his assistant are incognito on board and with the help of the world-famous tracer ( Charly Weiss ), who identifies the smell of Metulskie's hobby horse as coming from Baxter.

Emergence

Helge Schneider described his second film as his best, an assessment that is also supported by the majority of fans. The film is a colorful kaleidoscope of characters, scenes and locations. Even more than the other Schneider films, this one is characterized by a loose, often almost superfluous basic plot, which Schneider takes pleasure in tilting, twisting or even dropping over and over again. An avant-garde sequence in the Neandertal Museum in Mettmann, for example, which is accompanied by an opera parody sung by Schneider himself (Schneider sings the operating instructions for a Uher tape recorder backwards), turns out to be the inspector's dream. Most important to Schneider was the portrayal of the characters' lives and everyday lives. Then there was his special way of shooting: basically without a script.

The film was shot in Schneider's hometown of Mülheim an der Ruhr and in the rest of the Ruhr area such as Gelsenkirchen , where the Apollo circus performed in the so-called Kesselpark .

With the detective, Schneider brings a character to the screen that he developed in his detective novels and had already introduced in Texas - Doc Snyder keeps the world in suspense . An important stylistic feature of the novels is the absurdly exaggerated depiction of violence, which was not implemented in this form in the film. But this 00 tailor also has a latent arbitrariness and brutality when he destroys a little boy's scooter, for example. A scene in which he had a fight with Nihil Baxter did not make it into the final version of the film.

Schneider can be seen in four roles in the film: as Commissioner 00 Schneider, as criminal Nihil Baxter, as hobby surgeon Dr. Hasenbein and as pop star Johnny Flash, which made the sometimes complicated use of doubles necessary. Schneider purposely chose a double that didn't look like him. A scene with the commissioner, Körschgen and Nihil Baxter in the same room became a technical challenge when Körschgen was also unable to work due to illness.

Andreas Kunze (as Commissioner 00 Schneider and as a tiger in the circus) and Thomas Busch (as secretary and double to Helge Schneider) have other double roles.

The cars used in the film are a Jaguar E-Type , a Peugeot 404 and a Triumph TR3 .

Reviews

“Another attempt by the anti-entertainer Helge Schneider to demonstrate his highly dubious talents on the screen, to give various laypeople the opportunity to perform absurdly and at the same time to violate all the rules of the film trade. The 'art' of dabbling has reached new heights and depths - more of a refusal than a film. "

“Anyone who speaks of dabbling here must not overlook the fact that the lightness exuded by the 00 Schneider product is only possible through the absolute internalization of what defines the film as a medium of expression. Helge was once asked whether one must have mastered an instrument to play as wrongly as he likes to do. The answer is clear and if you look at the countless no-budget amateur films that try to achieve humor by imposing badness, it becomes clear that there is a clear line between good nonsense and sheer junk. "

continuation

Another 00 Schneider film by Helge Schneider with the title 00 Schneider - In the tropics of the lizard was shot in autumn 2012. It was released in German cinemas on October 10, 2013 .
